The Pittsburgh Marathon is a foot race (marathon) covering 26.2 miles (42.16 km) held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the United States. The race was held annually from 1985–2003 (most recently as the UPMC/City of Pittsburgh Marathon), and was revived in 2009 as the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. The 1988 and 2000 races were USA Olympic Trials for women and men, that were held separately from the regular event although both were held over the same course.
In the past, the course wound through the hilly topography of the city and usually started at the intersection of Butler Street and Baker Way (although it was later changed on several occasions to different starting locations), and ended at Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh. As of 2009, however, the race begins on Smallman Street and ends at the David Lawrence Convention Center. Numerous other Pittsburgh neighborhoods are along the route, including the South Side, Oakland, Shadyside, East Liberty, Highland Park, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, the Strip District, and the North Shore.
The 2009 race had the largest field in the history of the race. Registration for 2009 closed with 3,500 entrants in the full marathon, 3,500 entrants in the half marathon, and 2,000 entrants in the marathon relay.
The Pittsburgh Marathon hosted the United States Olympic Marathon Trials for men 2000 and the US Olympic Trials for women in 1988. In addition, it has served as the site for the United States men's national championship three times, the National Wheelchair Championship in 1986, as well as the Olympic Marathon Trials for both Finland and Denmark in the 1980's
