The Austin Marathon is an annual marathon held in Austin, Texas. Freescale Semiconductor, spun off from Motorola's semiconductor products sector in 2006, founded the marathon in 1991 and served as title sponsor for fifteen years. The marathon was sponsored by AT&T in 2007 and 2008, but ran with no title sponsor in 2009.
Given the geography of downtown Austin, the marathon is relatively flat compared to many other marathons. Along with the Dallas White Rock Marathon and the Houston Marathon, the Austin Marathon forms the final leg of the Marathons of Texas, a series of winter marathons held approximately one month apart from each other from December through February in Texas.
The LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon courses are USATF certified courses that run through some of Austin's most scenic and historic areas, including Lady Bird Johnson Lake, the Allandale and Hyde Park neighborhoods, Congress Avenue, the University of Texas campus, and the State Capitol complex.
The gently rolling and shaded course is 90% asphalt with long straightaways and approximately 28 turns. The 26.2 course gains approximately 14 feet per mile over the first 17 miles before dropping over 33 feet per mile over the final 9 miles to the finish on Congress Avenue in the shadow of the State Capitol building.
