Live at the Castle as the entertainment begins for Edinburgh Festival 2010

Edinburgh Festival is a collective term for several simultaneous arts and cultural festivals that take place during August each year in Edinburgh, Scotland. These festivals are arranged by a number of formally unrelated organizations, meaning there is no single event officially termed the Edinburgh Festival.

Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the sky-line of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.

Newcastle and Edinburgh trip

Newcastle, what a gorgeous city!

Had a fantastic 4 days in Newcastle, spent most of the time in Northumberland street and Eldon Square. Ate too much, shopped too much and the weather was a mixed bag of rain, with some sunshine in between. Had a really relaxing time and just vegged out for a while, which was good for the soul!

Back to my home town of Edinburgh and headed straight into fog and drizzle, ah but it was good to be back. My niece immediately took charge and dragged me to the fudge shop on the royal mile, (http://www.myworldwebcams.com/uk/edinburgh_royal_mile.html) delicious, but pricey, then she needed to have a look around the shops as she was running out of accessories - she's 9!!

As is always my custom, I have haggis on my first night back, good Scottish lass that I am, it's just scrumptious. The weather brightened up and it was off to the cinema to see Shrek, took my nan as well, who loved it just as much as my niece!

My family duties called and I spent half a day looking at hotels on the internet for my mum's trip to Marrakesh and trying to find somewhere nearby that had a printer to print off her boarding passes and get all checked in - she's a worry monkey and it just had to be done there and then to give her peace of mind!!!

My last day in Edinburgh was a glorious one, sun was shining, met my sister for an early morning cinema session, Twilight Eclipse, lunch and a bottle of wine at a lovely little place at the shore side, beautiful location and quite busy.

All in all a successful trip, 2 wonderful cities, perfect for a much needed break away.

Back to the heat and sunshine, it's good to be home!!!

Back to Edinburgh for 3 days!

Well I've booked it and heading home to see the family and get a break from the heat here!

Wanted to go In August so I could catch a show at the Edinburgh festival, but needs must and I'll miss it by a week!

Already planned in my head where I'm going, what restaurants I'll be visiting, my nan loves Chinese, but I'm hoping to tempt her into coming to my favourite Mongolian restuarant, aptly named Khublai Khan, it's a wonderful restaurant.

Then my sister has booked me for an evening at the Witchery and possibly a cocktail or 2 along George Street.

If it's toastie (a long shot I know) then I'll spend the day with my niece at the Botanical Gardens and head to Stockbridge to have a nosey through the charity shops, or maybe head up to Princess Street Gardens as it's been ages since I've just walked through there.

Getting excited now,as it's been almost 2 years since I've been back and I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone.

Then, cheeky I know, I'm heading to the Metro (Newcastle) for a spot of retail therapy and maybe lunch along the quayside.

Not very exotic I know, but it is a culture difference for me!!
